In May 2025, the Mises Institute will hold its next Mises Book Club, a program that promotes deep reading in Austrian economics.
The reading for this book club will be Murray Rothbard’s Economic Controversies.
Economic Controversies is a wonderful collection of essays by Murray Rothbard on method, economics, property rights, government intervention, and money and banking. George Pickering will create a schedule of selected readings from this book for guided discussion.
This is an excellent book for students interested in learning more about Austrian economics. According to Gene Epstein, “It contains all of Rothbard’s best essays. If there is any single book worthy of being called a companion volume to Man, Economy, and State, this is it.” Economic Controversies also serves as a great introduction to Man, Economy, and State, according to Epstein.
Starting on Thursday, May 29, a small group of specially selected undergraduate students will dive deep into this work with George Pickering over eight weekly virtual meetings. The meetings will be held on Thursday evenings from 4 to 5 p.m. central time, and students will receive complimentary hard copies of the book.
Please apply for a position in the Mises Book Club by Friday, May 2. Decisions will be communicated to all applicants by Friday, May 9.
