How Low Can the Democrats Go?

They appear to be falling into a bottomless pit.

In one of his most beloved routines, the late, great host of The Tonight Show, Johnny Carson, would say something like, “It’s cold today,” to which his sidekick Ed McMahon and the audience would respond in unison, “HOW cold is it?” Carson would then follow with a hilarious answer, such as, “It’s so cold, I saw a politician with his hands in his OWN pockets.”  A contemporary spinoff of that comedic question might well be asked of today’s beleaguered Democrats. HOW low can they go?

Well, they are now so low that holding up little round signs at President Donald Trump’s address to Congress reading “False” or “Musk Steals” appears to represent the sum of their current belief system. They are so low that they were reduced to getting attention that night with the shouting and cane-wielding adolescent protest of Rep. Al Green (D-TX). They are so low that, when Green was censured for his behavior, several of his colleagues joined him in singing “We Shall Overcome” on the House floor (what they seek to overcome, other than getting their clocks cleaned last November, was not specified).

One of the small handful of realistic Democrats, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), described his party’s deportment during Trump’s speech as a “sad cavalcade of self-owns and unhinged petulance. It only makes Trump look more presidential and restrained. We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to — and it may not be the winning message.” May not be?!?

Democrats Going Low

The Dems are so low right now that they produced a cringe-worthy “choose your fighter” viral dance video performed by members of Congress who obviously don’t know how to dance, so low that they repeatedly sing made-up, cacophonous songs in public led by people who obviously don’t know how to sing. They are so clueless that they were reduced to having Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) join hands with the long-since-disgraced Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) in shouting “we will win” on a street corner (what they will win while the GOP controls the whole government was not specified). They are so frustrated that elected Democrats have been reduced to using the f-bomb and the s-word repeatedly in recent days.

They are so delusional that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stood all by himself in front of the US Capitol declaring, contrary to all available evidence, that “the American people are with us.” They are so self-destructive that leftists (presumably all Democrats) are now protesting and vandalizing Tesla dealerships – the very embodiment of the electric-car and green-energy culture they long shoved down the throats of Americans. They are so debased that they now despise a man they once adored, Elon Musk, who is now receiving death threats on a regular basis.

They are so desperate that they viciously attack the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), supported by roughly 70% of the public, without naming a single one of the hundreds of boondoggles uncovered by DOGE that they are willing to defend – not one. They are so out of touch with everyday Americans that they foment protests over the roundup of illegal aliens who have committed felonies ranging from rape to murder, another policy supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans – but not the Democratic Party.

They are so misguided and in such denial about their toxicity that not a single Democrat in the Senate voted to ban boys from girls’ sports, an issue supported by 80% of the American people. And it gets worse. When leftist darling Gavin Newsom, the governor of California with transparent presidential ambitions, dared to say on his podcast that letting biological males participate in female sports is “unfair,” he received zero support from fellow Democrats and was shouted down by a parade of far-left politicians.

The left is so hopeless, stewing in its own juices, that leftist icon and frequent truth-teller Van Jones declared on CNN that the Democratic Party is “screwed,” adding:

“This is a nightmare … the Democratic Party is going through a massive set of internal crises. You have a party that got trapped two ways: One, defending a broken status quo that nobody likes because they thought that Donald Trump was going to make it worse. But when you’re defending the status quo, you’re going to lose … and then offending most people in the country, calling everybody sexist and racist and transphobic and every other name, and then saying, ‘please follow us.’”

Perhaps the most telltale sign of how desperate Democrats have become is that Stephen A. Smith, the outspoken ESPN sports commentator, is being discussed as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028. Seriously. You can look it up in The Guardian or watch his appearance on The View, where Smith, discussing the contenders for the next presidential election, said with a straight face, “I think I can beat them all.”

It has gotten so bad that the 36% approval the party famously received in the most recent Harvard/Harris poll actually looks good compared to the 31% approval from Quinnipiac. More specifically, Democrats in Congress received the lowest approval rating in the history of the Quinnipiac poll: 21%. Even Washington’s most famous liberal newspaper has lurched to the right, leading disgusted employees to march out the door, including longtime op-ed columnist Ruth Marcus. And in one final indignity, the famed polling outfit that Democrats always relied on, 538, has now been shuttered after predicting that Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Kamala Harris in 2024 would win the presidency. No interested buyer was found.

Pay attention, folks, and remember this moment, because the Democrats are as low as any time in decades. They are so low that the only place they have to go is up, but when and how they will rise from the ash heap remains a mystery even to them.
