Trump’s Patience With Russia Is Wearing Thin

Indications are that the US is growing tired of lack of ceasefire progress.

When is enough enough? This is the question President Donald Trump may be asking regarding his efforts to influence a ceasefire in Ukraine. Russia is playing for time, and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is struggling to remain relevant. At the Ukraine front, ground forces are engaging superior Kremlin forces to block and repel continued Russian infantry and mechanized assaults in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast. However, neither side is making significant progress, and the conflict is stalemated.

Russia Apprised of US Outline for Peace

Progress is no better on the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire negotiations. The recent high-level talks in Paris on April 17, sponsored by French President Emmanuel Macron, held the promise of getting European countries on board with at least a glimmer of development toward a ceasefire. If nothing else, the talks at the Élysée Palace, with the attendance of diplomats from Britain, France, Germany, and Ukraine, brought European equities back onto the peace negotiations stage. “President Trump has committed his administration to peace and a future that everyone can count on. His vision and demand for an end to the hostilities remains a north star for Secretary Rubio, Ambassador Witkoff, [and] Special Presidential Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg,” Tammy Bruce, State Department spokeswoman, told reporters at a press briefing.

To that end, Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and conveyed the same message provided to the participants in the Paris meeting: “President Trump and the United States want this war to end and have now presented to all parties the outlines of a durable and lasting peace. The encouraging reception in Paris to the US framework shows that peace is possible if all parties commit to reaching an agreement,” according to a readout of the phone conversation.

Nonetheless, despite whatever encouragement might result from the Paris meetings, the US delegation has a more sober and realistic perspective. As he was about to board his plane and head to Paris, Rubio stated the US position in an impromptu press event on the tarmac:

“I think it’s important to remind everybody that the Ukraine war is a terrible thing, but it’s not our war. We didn’t start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine over the last three years. And we want it to end. It’s not our war. I want everyone to understand that … We are now reaching a point where we need to decide and determine if this is even possible or not … To try to figure out very soon, and I’m talking about a matter of days, not a matter of weeks, whether or not this is a war that can be ended … If it’s not possible … Then I think the president is at a point where he’s going to say, well, we’re done.”

It’s hard not to miss the sense of President Trump’s frustration channeled through the chief foreign policy executive’s words. Rubio explained that the Trump administration is not interested in an unending round of meetings that never quite get to closure. The US president started the ceasefire negotiation process, wanting to put an end to the continuing unimaginable loss of life. His objective was an immediate and unconditional 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine accepted the proposal, but Russia did not agree. Instead, Moscow continued with its relentless ballistic and cruise missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and towns.

Whatever benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin thought he might gain from the attacks, the results suggest they have failed to capture a significant tactical advantage. According to the Institute for the Study of War’s (ISW) Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, April 17, 2025, “Commander of the Ukrainian National Guard, Brigadier General Oleksandr Pivnenko, reported on April 17 that Ukrainian forces repelled a reinforced company-sized mechanized assault in the Pokrovsk direction.” Additionally, the Russians lost “21 armored fighting vehicles, two other vehicles, and 96 motorcycles and killed and wounded over 240 Russian soldiers,” the ISW explained.

Is the Kremlin Looking to China for Soldiers?

Furthermore, there is more evidence emerging that Russia continues to be limited by the attrition of combat-seasoned soldiers for duty in Ukraine. We know that Moscow has enlisted the aid of North Korea for ground troops. Now, China is also a source for filling out the ranks of Russian fighters. “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday that Ukrainian forces have captured two Chinese citizens fighting on Russia’s behalf,” the Daily Caller reported.

Trump is not waiting to chase an elusive agreement from Russia while continuing the talks that may not prove fruitful. Perhaps the US declaring it will not wait forever for a ceasefire agreement will prompt both sides to view Washington’s peace outline favorably. That would require Russia to realize it must stop the killing. The decision is Putin’s – but Trump may not be willing to wait.
