The acting leader of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is reportedly set to resign after a deal was recently set in place on behalf of the agency requiring it to share tax data on undocumented immigrants.

The Treasury Department announced on Tuesday that Melanie Krause, a commissioner at the IRS and the third person to lead the agency since the year began, will soon depart as part of the Trump administration’s proposed deferred resignation program.

The announcement of her departure comes less than a week before the deadline for Americans to file their taxes.

According to the Washington Post, Krause chose to resign in protest of the Trump administration’s recent actions.

“Melanie Krause has been leading the IRS through a time of extraordinary change,” a Treasury Department spokesperson told the outlet, adding that the department was “in the midst of breaking down data silos that for too long have stood in the way of identifying waste, fraud, and abuse and bringing criminals to justice.”

Meanwhile, the IRS recently just finalized an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to share taxpayer information in order to help immigration agencies identify undocumented immigrants.

The deal was signed on Monday by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, bypassing Krause as the head of the tax-collecting agency, which is part of the Treasury Department — according to the Washington Post

Under the new agreement, the DHS will be authorized to request information on illegals with existing deportation orders who are also under criminal investigation. The Internal Revenue Service will subsequently be responsible for providing relevant taxpayer data already on file.

Krause now joins a list of former heads of the tax agency who have stepped down from their role, citing their disapproval of the Trump administration.

Doug O’Donnell, the previous acting head of the IRS, resigned due to the Treasury’s attempt to sign a data-sharing agreement with DHS in February. Additionally, the last Senate-confirmed IRS chief, Danny Wefel, left the position on President Trump’s first day as well.

The Trump administration has since argued that this is a necessary step toward a better-functioning government — one that prohibits ongoing fraud and unnecessary handouts.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the government is finally doing what it should have done all along: sharing information across the federal government to solve problems,” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the IRS implemented a new wave of job cuts last Friday — with the goal of eliminating a quarter of its workforce.
